In 2025, Beacon Health System acquired Borgess Hospital and its affiliated hospitals and foundations. This exciting new chapter for our southwest Michigan community introduces Beacon’s nonprofit mission to deliver outstanding care, inspire health and connect with heart to everyone in our state looking for quality health care. Today, our community of health care professionals, patients and local support includes generosity from all corners of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. But that doesn’t mean your impact leaves your community—no matter where you are located in the Beacon network, your direct impact remains with the programs and region that you support.
Gifts to Beacon Health Foundation, formerly Borgess Foundation in Michigan, help bring cutting-edge technology, convenient facilities and patient assistance to the care sites you want to support throughout southwest Michigan. The support of donors throughout our Michigan community offers inspiration to the team members who treat our patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Donors like you allow Beacon Health Foundation to provide care for those patients who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing financial difficulties. With your support, we are able to purchase new equipment and technology for our hospitals, aiding our doctors and staff as they provide the most compassionate, cutting-edge care possible. Your generosity also helps us create and support programs in our community that reach far beyond our hospital walls.

Tree of Love
Tree of Love: Helping Save Lives Through Early Detection
Since 1985, the Tree of Love campaign has provided lifesaving access to mammograms and breast health services for patients in need across southwest Michigan. Early detection is key — with a 98% five-year survival rate when breast cancer is caught early — yet many patients lack insurance for critical screenings.
Thanks to generous donors, more than 120 patients received over $132,000 in care last year alone. Your support helps ensure that everyone has access to essential breast health services and early detection.
The 2026 Tree of Love Lighting Ceremony will take place on December 3 at 5:30 p.m. More information will be shared closer to the event date.

FAQs
Philanthropic support was and is a vital part of Borgess Hospital’s legacy, and it remains a central focus to Beacon Health System. Our community stays at the heart of everything we do. Every dollar designated for Beacon Kalamazoo or its affiliated hospitals—both now and in the future—stays local, directly benefiting the people and places that matter most to you.
Absolutely. Rest assured that every dollar you have given—and every future gift you make—will continue to be used for the specific purposes you intended, right here in our Michigan community. All previous donations to the Borgess Foundations will remain in the communities where they were given and will be used strictly for the purposes you designated.
Beacon Health Foundation’s priorities are focused on tailoring your impact to the health care communities you support. We encourage you to visit our Who we are page to learn more about the Foundation’s mission and its longstanding drive for excellence in health care and community support. Our team in Michigan is now a part of the Beacon family, and we are excited to grow our Michigan network with you.
Yes! Donors can continue to designate their gifts to specific hospitals or programs. We understand the importance of supporting areas that are meaningful to you, and we will continue to honor your preferences. Our donation forms and online giving platforms will make it easy for you to direct your contributions.
The three previous Borgess Foundations—for Kalamazoo, Dowagiac and Allegan— have integrated into Beacon Health Foundation. This change streamlined our operations and maximized impact, while maintaining charitable support for each hospital and community’s unique needs. Each foundation’s legacy and focus areas has been preserved, ensuring continuity in their philanthropic efforts.
We are committed to transparency and regular communication. Updates will be provided through newsletters, our website, and community meetings. You can expect timely information about any changes, new initiatives, and opportunities for involvement.
About Beacon Health Foundation
At Beacon Health Foundation, we believe our greatest strength lies in the people we serve—our neighbors, friends and families who care deeply about the health of our region. Our mission extends beyond hospitals and clinics; we are dedicated to supporting the well-being of every corner of our community.
Philanthropy is the driving force behind transforming health care. By listening to the unique needs of our community and creating opportunities for local investment, we empower individuals to make meaningful contributions where they matter most—right here at home. Our approach blends the resources of a larger health system with a commitment to honoring the spirit of local giving.
Our story
Founded in 2017, Beacon Health Foundation united the Memorial Hospital Foundation and Elkhart General Hospital Foundation to create a system-wide foundation supporting Beacon Health System, its patients and the broader community. This collaborative model was designed to better serve our hospitals and those who rely on them.
As the community has grown, so has the foundation. Community Hospital of Bremen joined in 2019, followed by Three Rivers Hospital Foundation in 2021. Together, we champion the health and vitality of our region—guided by local voices, fueled by generosity and committed to lasting impact.
Guided by purpose and partnership
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Beacon Health Foundation mobilizes generosity to enhance patient care, expand access to services, support wellness programs, and drive healthcare innovation. In 2024 alone, the Foundation raised over $9 million to advance Beacon’s mission. Our dedicated team of six professionals carefully stewards these resources to ensure every dollar supports Beacon’s priorities. The Foundation’s operating endowment covers the administrative costs of the Foundation. This means that 100% of donor contributions are directed to the program or facility specified, ensuring gifts have the greatest possible impact.
Local patients, local impact
Throughout both our Michigan and Indiana communities, we fund life-changing initiatives such as specialized care at Beacon Children’s Hospital, nursing education scholarships, community health programs and expanded cancer services. We also create opportunities for patients and families to honor caregivers, fostering a culture of appreciation and excellence.
How we do it
The Foundation works closely with clinicians, hospitals and programs across the system to align philanthropic investments with Beacon Health System’s strategic goals. Governed by a board of community and business leaders and several leader councils in each of our local hospital communities, we are committed to accountability, stewardship and health care excellence. Through collaboration, innovation and the power of giving, Beacon Health Foundation accelerates health care transformation and addresses unmet needs—making a lasting difference in the health and well-being of our regions.
